The Restaking Bubble: The Hidden Dangers and Systemic Risk of EigenLayer on Ethereum
The Ethereum DeFi ecosystem is known for its ability to build complex financial instruments on top of existing protocols. The most paradigmatic example of recent years is restaking, a concept popularized by EigenLayer that has attracted billions of dollars in deposits, becoming the most popular performance engine on the market.
However, as the volume of ETH locked in restaking reaches record levels, Ethereum analysts and core developers are beginning to warn of the centralization risks and systemic instability that this practice introduces.
Understanding Resttaking and AVSs
To understand the risks, we must first understand how EigenLayer works. Ethereum staking requires depositing 32 ETH to become a validator and secure the mainnet.
Restaking allows validators to take that same ETH that is already locked and use it to secure other external services, known as Actively Validated Services or AVSs, such as cross-chain bridges, oracles, or secondary networks.

This model allows new blockchain projects to obtain shared security inherited from Ethereum without needing to recruit their own network of validators, while the user obtains a double return on the same capital.
Hidden dangers: Why is it a dangerous game?
Despite its immediate economic benefits, restaking introduces three major structural threats to Ethereum:
1. Cascade Slashing (Penalties)
If a validator staking multiple AVSs experiences a technical failure (for example, due to a bug in the AVS software), their ETH may be slashed. This punishment will directly impact your main Ethereum stake, weakening the security of the base layer of the global blockchain due to a failure in an external application.
2. Leveraging Social Consensus
If a massive AVS suffers a hack or a coordinated attack by malicious validators that compromises billions of dollars, investors could push for the Ethereum network to fork to rescue the funds. This would call into question the immutability and neutrality of Ethereum.
3. Centralization of Operators
Restaking demands a level of technical performance and monitoring that is beyond the reach of the average home validator. This encourages ETH to concentrate in a few gigantic node operators, undermining the founding principle of Ethereum decentralization.
Restaking is a double-edged sword: it democratizes cryptoeconomic security, but at the cost of creating a financial tower of cards whose collapse could shake the foundations of the second largest cryptocurrency network in the world.
