Imagine opening your Bitcoin or Ethereum wallet and discovering that you have received an unsolicited transaction for a ridiculously small amount, like 0.000005 BTC (a few cents on the dollar). Although at first glance it may seem like a network error or an insignificant gift, in reality you could be under the crosshairs of a Dust Attack or Dusting Attack.

This tactic, used by forensic analysis agencies, hackers and governments, is not intended to steal your funds directly, but rather to completely destroy your anonymity online.

The concept of "dust" and the UTXO model

To understand the attack, it is necessary to understand the concept of "dust". In the crypto ecosystem, dust refers to any amount of cryptocurrency that is so small that its value is less than the network fee required to spend it.

In networks based on UTXO (Unspent Transaction Outputs) like Bitcoin, transactions are made by putting together different fractions of coins that you own.

##How does dust attack work?

The attacker sends these minuscule amounts in bulk to thousands of public addresses obtained from block explorers. Once the "dust" is in your wallet, the attacker simply waits.

  1. Transaction Consolidation: When you decide to send your cryptocurrencies to another wallet or exchange to sell them, your wallet software automatically combines your legitimate coins with the dust fraction to complete the amount.
  2. Graph analysis: When this consolidated transaction is carried out, the attacker analyzes the network and discovers the link between your initial address (the one that received the dust) and the rest of your private addresses.
  3. Final Identification: If any of the connected addresses subsequently interact with an exchange that requires identity verification (KYC), the attacker can legally request or force the exchange to reveal your real name and banking details, deanonymizing your entire financial history.

How to mitigate and avoid dusting attacks

The fundamental safety rule is never touch the received powder.

  • Currency Control (UTXO Control): Use advanced wallets (such as Samourai Wallet, Sparrow or Electrum) that support individual control of UTXOs. This allows you to right-click on the dust transaction and mark it as "Do Not Spend", leaving it frozen for life.
  • Single-use addresses: Avoid reusing the same deposit address to receive transactions.
  • Account-based networks: On networks like Ethereum (which do not use UTXO), dust is not automatically pooled when spending funds, making these types of attacks difficult, although it is still useful for spam and transaction history spoofing techniques.
