Disposable emails and aliases: Protect your inbox against spam and leaks
Giving out your personal email address on every web service you sign up for is one of the main sources of bulk spam and spoofing risks. If one of those sites is hacked, your email address is added to global phishing lists.
Alias-based defense
One of the best security strategies is compartmentalization. Instead of giving your unique email address, you can use dedicated aliases for each website.
There are several types of aliases:
- Tagging aliases (Plus Addressing): Use the format `youruser+service_name@gmail.com`. Most email services ignore what comes after the `+` sign and deliver it to your main inbox.
- Deterministic or masked aliases: Create random or encrypted aliases that leave no trace of your primary username.
This technique allows you to create filtering rules in your mailbox to automatically archive or delete emails if a specific alias starts receiving spam.
